Trafalgar is a friendly country town on the eastern side of Baw Baw Shire, between Yarragon and Moe, with the Strzelecki Ranges rising to the south and farmland all around. The town has a strong community feel, with a main street of local shops, sporting clubs, schools and a mix of homes that range from early timber cottages to newer houses on the edges of town. Many residents commute to Warragul, Moe, Morwell or the Latrobe Valley, while others are retirees and families who have lived in the district for generations.
We provide handyman services across Trafalgar 3824 and the surrounding rural area. Older homes need a different kind of care than new ones, and much of our work in Trafalgar involves keeping well-loved homes in good order.

Older homes in Trafalgar
Trafalgar has many homes built in the early and middle decades of last century: timber weatherboards on stumps, with timber floors, timber windows, high ceilings and original doors. These homes are full of character but need regular care.
Doors and windows
Timber doors and windows swell in the damp Gippsland winter and shrink in summer. Doors stick, drag on floors, and fail to latch. Sash windows jam or have broken sash cords. We plane and adjust doors, re-hang them on new hinges, replace latches, free stuck windows, and replace sash cords where practical. Rotted window sills and frame sections can sometimes be repaired with timber or epoxy, or replaced in sections.
Floors
Timber floors on stumps squeak as boards shrink and nails loosen. We secure boards from above or below where there is access. Floors that are springy, sloping or uneven may indicate stump or subfloor problems, which need a restumping specialist.
Plaster
Older homes may have lath and plaster walls or early plasterboard. Cracks appear as houses move with the seasons and the soil. We repair cracks and holes to suit the wall type. Cornice cracks and ceiling cracks are common and usually cosmetic, but sagging ceilings should be checked urgently by a builder.
Asbestos
Homes built before 1990 may contain asbestos cement sheeting in eaves, wet areas, external cladding and fences. We do not cut, drill, sand or remove material that may contain asbestos. If we suspect asbestos, we stop work and recommend testing by a licensed assessor.

Newer homes
Trafalgar has also seen new housing on its edges, bringing the typical new-home jobs: TV mounting, blinds and curtain rods, flat-pack furniture, shelving, picture hanging and settlement crack repairs. See TV wall mounting, flat-pack assembly and picture and shelf hanging.
Rural properties
Farms and lifestyle blocks around Trafalgar, including towards the hills to the south, have sheds, gates, long fences and outbuildings. We repair gates, fix shed doors, replace palings and rails on house fences, and clean gutters on outbuildings. Large rural fencing jobs are better suited to fencing contractors.
Older residents in Trafalgar
Many older residents in Trafalgar want to stay in the homes they love. Small changes help: grab rails in bathrooms and toilets, handrails on steps, repairs to uneven paths and loose steps, lever door handles, better lighting arrangements (with an electrician for wiring), and help with gutters and high jobs. Where an occupational therapist has assessed the home, we install modifications to their recommendations.
Weather in Trafalgar
The Trafalgar area gets plenty of rain, and the hills to the south can bring strong winds and storms. Leaves and debris fill gutters, fences and gates are loosened by wind, and timber fences, decks and pergolas weather quickly. Moss grows on shaded paths and decks. Regular maintenance prevents bigger problems. See property maintenance.

A typical Trafalgar job
Here is a common example. An older weatherboard home in Trafalgar has a list: the front door sticks and will not latch in winter, two bedroom windows are hard to open, the hallway floor squeaks, there is a crack in the lounge ceiling cornice, the back steps are loose, and the owner would like a grab rail in the shower.
The visit
The front door is planed, the hinges tightened and the strike plate adjusted so it latches. Windows are freed and lubricated. Squeaky boards are secured. The cornice crack is filled and touched up. The back steps are re-fixed with new fixings, and the grab rail is installed into solid framing.
The result
The home works smoothly again and is safer for the owner.
What we do not do
We do not do electrical wiring, plumbing, gas work, structural work, restumping, roofing on steep or fragile roofs, or asbestos removal. We will tell you when a licensed trade or specialist is needed.

Caring for period features
Original features such as timber fretwork, decorative architraves, picture rails, panelled doors and leadlight windows add value and character to older Trafalgar homes. When repairing these features, we aim to keep as much original material as possible, matching profiles and timbers, and avoiding modern replacements that look out of place. Leadlight repairs are specialist work, but we can repair the timber frames around them.
Seasonal checklist
- Autumn: clean gutters, check fences and gates before winter winds, and seal draughts around doors and windows.
- Winter: watch for sticking doors, mould, and leaks showing as stains on plaster.
- Spring: pressure wash paths and decks, oil decks and repair flyscreens.
- Summer: clear dry debris around the home, and touch up exterior paint while it is dry.
Bathrooms in older homes
Many older Trafalgar homes have bathrooms that were renovated decades ago. Grout cracks and stains, silicone grows mould, tiles crack or come loose, and towel rails pull out of old walls. A full renovation is not always needed. Regrouting, replacing failed silicone, swapping a few cracked tiles where matches are available, re-fixing or replacing towel rails, fitting a new mirror or cabinet, and installing grab rails can transform a tired bathroom. Where water has got behind tiles and the wall or floor is soft, the waterproofing has likely failed, and a bathroom renovator or waterproofer is needed. See bathroom fixtures and accessories and silicone and caulking.
Kitchens
Original or older kitchens often have sagging cupboard doors, worn hinges, broken drawer runners and swollen chipboard under sinks. We replace hinges with modern soft-close types where the doors suit, fit new drawer runners, replace damaged shelves and kickboards, and change handles to freshen the look. Swelling under sinks usually means a past or current leak, which should be checked by a plumber before the cabinet is repaired. See kitchen cupboard repairs.
Preparing to sell
Trafalgar homes attract buyers looking for value and a country lifestyle. Before listing, small repairs make a big difference to first impressions: doors that open smoothly, patched and painted walls, tidy fences and gates, clean gutters, pressure-washed paths and a clear garden. Agents often provide a list after an appraisal, and we can work through it quickly.
Community and local suppliers
We source timber, hardware and materials locally where we can, and dispose of rubbish at the local transfer stations, recycling what is possible.
Clear communication
We confirm arrival times, explain what we find, and let you know before doing anything outside the agreed scope. If a job needs another trade, we tell you straight away so you can plan.
