Painting & Touch-Ups

A fresh coat of paint changes a room more than almost any other small job, and a neat touch-up is often the final step that makes a repair disappear. We take on small painting jobs and touch-ups that are too small for a painting contractor but too fiddly or time-consuming for most homeowners: painting over plaster patches, refreshing doors and trims, a single feature wall, a rental bedroom after a long tenancy, weathered window frames or a front door that has faded in the afternoon sun.

We work in homes, rentals and small businesses throughout Warragul, Drouin, Trafalgar, Yarragon and the surrounding Baw Baw towns.

What we paint

Walls after repairs

When we patch plaster, the job is not finished until the wall looks right. Where you have the original paint or know the colour and brand, we prime the patch and apply finish coats. Where a wall has aged or faded, touching up a patch can leave a visible difference, so we often suggest painting the whole wall from corner to corner. It takes a little longer and gives a seamless result.

Doors and frames

Internal doors collect fingerprints, scuffs and knocks, and frames get chipped by vacuum cleaners and moving furniture. Repainting doors and frames in a semi-gloss or gloss enamel lifts a hallway instantly. We fill dents, sand, undercoat where needed and apply finish coats.

Skirting, architraves and trims

Skirting boards take the most punishment of any painted surface. We repair damaged sections, fill nail holes and gaps, caulk where the trim meets the wall and repaint.

Feature walls and single rooms

A feature wall behind a bed or a lounge, a child’s bedroom in a new colour, a study or a small laundry. For whole houses or large areas, a painting contractor is usually the better choice, and we will say so.

Rental refreshes

Between tenancies, rental properties often need touch-ups on walls, doors and trims to meet the condition at the start of the lease. We work to the property manager’s list. See our end-of-lease repairs page.

Small exterior jobs

Front doors, window frames, fascia sections, gates, letterboxes, handrails and small timber details. In West Gippsland, exterior timber takes a beating from rain, frost and sun, and paint on the weather side of a house can fail within a few years. Small exterior jobs keep the timber protected until a full repaint is due.

Choosing the right paint

Using the correct product matters as much as technique.

  • Ceilings. Flat, low-sheen ceiling paint hides imperfections.
  • Living areas and bedrooms. Low-sheen or matt acrylic is common. Low sheen is easier to wipe clean.
  • Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Semi-gloss or a dedicated wet-area paint with mould resistance. West Gippsland bathrooms without good ventilation are prone to mould, so product choice matters.
  • Doors and trims. Water-based or oil-based enamel in semi-gloss or gloss. If existing trims are oil-based and you want water-based paint, we prepare the surface with a suitable primer so the new coat adheres.
  • Exterior timber. A quality exterior acrylic over appropriate primer, with sealed end grain.

If you have leftover paint from the builder or the last painter, keep the tin. The label tells us the brand, colour and sheen, which makes matching much easier.

Preparation is most of the job

Painting is mostly preparation. A good finish needs:

  • Clean surfaces free of grease, dust and mould. Kitchen walls and bathroom ceilings often need washing first.
  • Filled holes and cracks, sanded smooth.
  • Gaps caulked where trims meet walls.
  • Glossy surfaces lightly sanded or primed so the new paint grips.
  • Bare timber and plaster patches primed.
  • Furniture moved and floors protected with drop sheets.

We take the time to prepare properly, because skipping preparation shows in the finished result.

Lead paint in older homes

Paint applied before about 1970 may contain lead, and many older homes in Warragul, Trafalgar and Yarragon have layers of it on doors, windows and trims. Lead dust is hazardous, particularly to children and pregnant women. If we are working on surfaces likely to contain lead, we avoid dry sanding and power sanding, use wet preparation methods, contain dust and clean up thoroughly. For larger areas we recommend testing before work begins. If a significant area of lead paint needs to be removed, that job is better suited to a specialist.

Weather and drying times

West Gippsland’s weather affects painting more than people expect. Cold mornings, high humidity and frequent rain slow drying and can affect how acrylic paints cure. For exterior work we watch the forecast and avoid painting when rain is due within hours, when surfaces are wet with dew, or on frosty mornings. Inside, we may need to allow extra time between coats in winter. This is one reason we sometimes schedule painting over two visits.

Mould and moisture

Mould on bathroom ceilings, around windows and in the corners of cold rooms is common in the district during winter. Painting over mould does not solve it. We clean and treat affected areas, allow them to dry, prime with a stain-blocking primer and finish with a mould-resistant paint. We also look for the cause: poor ventilation, a missing or broken exhaust fan, condensation on single-glazed windows or a leak. If the cause is an exhaust fan that needs replacing, that is a job for an electrician, and we will say so.

Colour matching

If you do not have the original paint, matching an existing colour is possible but not always perfect. We can take a small paint chip to a paint retailer for computer matching. Paint ages and fades, especially in rooms with strong sun, so even a correctly matched colour may look different on an old wall. When it matters, painting to natural break points, such as from corner to corner or ceiling to skirting, avoids patchy results.

Doors and windows that stick after painting

Painted-shut windows and doors that stick after painting are common in older homes. When we paint doors and windows, we keep paint off the edges that close against the frame and the moving parts of the sash, and we ease anything already stuck. If you have windows that have been painted shut for years, we can free them; see our window and flyscreen repairs page.

What we do not do

We focus on small painting jobs and touch-ups. For whole-house interiors, full exterior repaints, high two-storey exteriors, roof painting and specialist finishes, we recommend a painting contractor. We do not paint over surfaces that may contain asbestos without testing.

A typical touch-up visit, step by step

To give you an idea of how a small painting job runs, here is a common example: a three-bedroom brick veneer home in Drouin with patched walls in two bedrooms, scuffed hallway doors and a faded front door.

Arrival and protection

We start by walking through with you to confirm colours, sheen levels and which surfaces are included. Furniture is moved away from walls or covered, floors are protected with drop sheets, and hardware such as door handles and hinges is removed or masked.

Preparation

Patches from earlier plaster work are lightly sanded and spot-primed. Walls are wiped down to remove dust and grease. Hallway doors are washed, dents filled and the surfaces sanded to give the new enamel something to grip. The front door, which faces west and has taken years of afternoon sun, is sanded back where the paint has chalked and cracked, and bare spots are primed.

First coats

Walls are cut in at the ceiling, skirting and corners with a brush, then rolled. Doors get their first enamel coat. The front door gets its primer and first coat while the weather is dry.

Second coats and finishing

After drying time, second coats are applied. Hardware is refitted, edges checked and any small runs or missed spots fixed.

Clean-up and walk-through

Brushes and rollers are cleaned off site wherever possible, drop sheets folded up, furniture returned, and we walk through each area with you. Leftover paint is labelled with the room and surface so future touch-ups are easy.

Painting for sale or settlement

When a home is about to go on the market, painting is one of the most effective small investments. Buyers notice scuffed walls and chipped doors, and fresh neutral paint in key rooms makes photographs look brighter. We regularly work through pre-sale lists for owners in Warragul and Drouin, coordinating with the agent’s photography date. If a full repaint is needed, we will tell you early so you can book a painter in time.

Keeping painted surfaces looking good

Paint lasts longer when it is cared for. Wash enamel doors and trims with mild soapy water rather than abrasive cleaners. Keep bathrooms ventilated during and after showers to reduce mould. On the outside, trim shrubs back from walls so they do not rub the paint and hold moisture against it, and re-seal small cracks in exterior timber before water gets in. A small annual touch-up of the most exposed surfaces, such as the bottom rail of the front door and the sills of west-facing windows, stops minor wear turning into rot.

Frequently asked questions

Do you paint whole houses?

No. We focus on small painting jobs and touch-ups. For whole-house interiors or exterior repaints we recommend a painting contractor.

Can you match my existing paint?

If you have the original tin or colour details, matching is straightforward. Otherwise we can get a chip computer-matched, but aged paint may still differ, so painting to a natural break point gives the best result.

Can you paint over mould?

We clean and treat mould first, then prime with a stain-blocking primer and use a mould-resistant paint. We also look for the cause, such as poor ventilation.

Do you supply paint?

We can supply paint or use paint you already have. Let us know your preference when you request a quote.

Is lead paint a problem?

Paint from before about 1970 may contain lead. We avoid dry sanding, contain dust and recommend testing on larger areas.

How long should I wait before hanging pictures on freshly painted walls?

Acrylic paint is touch-dry quickly but takes longer to cure fully. We suggest waiting a few days before hanging pictures or pushing furniture against new paint, and longer in cold, damp weather.
