Flat-Pack Assembly

Flat-pack furniture is affordable and convenient, and it arrives at your door in boxes. Then comes the hard part: dozens of panels, bags of fittings, an instruction booklet with no words, and the realisation that a large wardrobe will take an entire afternoon, two people and more patience than anyone has after a long day. Mistakes are easy to make and hard to undo, and badly assembled furniture wobbles, sags and fails early.

We assemble flat-pack furniture for homes, rentals, offices and businesses across Warragul, Drouin, Trafalgar, Yarragon and the surrounding district. Whether you have one bookcase or a house full of boxes after a move, we put it together properly, anchor it safely and take the packaging away.

What we assemble

  • Bedroom furniture: bed frames, bunk beds, loft beds, cots, chests of drawers, bedside tables, dressers and wardrobes.
  • Wardrobes and robe systems: freestanding wardrobes, sliding-door wardrobes and modular robe fit-outs.
  • Living room furniture: TV units, entertainment centres, bookcases, display cabinets, coffee tables and shelving units.
  • Dining furniture: tables, chairs, buffets and sideboards.
  • Office furniture: desks, sit-stand desks, office chairs, filing cabinets, bookshelves and meeting tables.
  • Kitchen and laundry: pantry units, freestanding storage, trolleys and laundry cabinets.
  • Children’s furniture: cots, change tables, toy storage, play kitchens and desks.
  • Outdoor furniture: dining settings, lounge sets, sun loungers, benches, storage boxes and planter boxes.
  • Play equipment: trampolines, swing sets, cubby houses and climbing frames (see below).
  • Garden sheds: small kit sheds and storage units on a prepared base.
  • Gym equipment: home gym benches and racks.

We assemble products from the major furniture retailers and online stores. If you are unsure whether we can assemble something, send us the product name or a link.

Why have it assembled professionally?

  • Time. A large wardrobe or bed frame that would take you an afternoon takes us a fraction of that, because we do it regularly and have the right tools.
  • Quality. Cam locks tightened correctly, panels square, drawers running smoothly and doors aligned. Badly assembled furniture loosens and fails.
  • Safety. Tall units anchored to the wall, bunk beds assembled with every bolt tightened, and play equipment set up to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Warranty. Many manufacturers’ warranties depend on correct assembly.
  • Packaging. We break down boxes and remove packaging, so you are not left with a garage full of cardboard and polystyrene.

Anchoring furniture to the wall

Tip-overs of furniture and TVs are a serious risk to young children, who climb drawers and shelves. Tall and heavy items such as wardrobes, bookcases, chests of drawers and display cabinets should be anchored to the wall. Most flat-pack furniture comes with an anti-tip kit, but the wall fixings provided are often unsuitable for the wall in your home. We fix anti-tip straps or brackets into studs or masonry with the right anchors, and we strongly recommend anchoring in every home with children, and in homes where children visit.

Moving house and new homes

New homes in the growing estates of Warragul and Drouin often mean a full house of new furniture, all arriving in boxes. After a move, we can assemble everything over one or more visits, room by room, and combine it with other jobs such as hanging pictures, mounting the TV, fitting curtain rods and putting up hooks. See picture and shelf hanging and TV wall mounting.

Disassembly and reassembly

Moving house, renovating or rearranging rooms often means taking furniture apart and putting it back together. Flat-pack furniture can usually be disassembled and reassembled once or twice, though each time the cam locks and dowel holes in particleboard weaken. We disassemble carefully, bag and label the fittings, and reassemble at the new location. Where holes have stripped, we repair them with dowels or inserts.

Office fit-outs

Small businesses opening or refurbishing offices, clinics and shops often need many desks, chairs, storage units and shelving assembled quickly. We can assemble office furniture before or after hours, set up workstations and tidy cables. See commercial handyman.

Play equipment and trampolines

Trampolines, swing sets and climbing frames need to be assembled exactly to the instructions, positioned on level ground with safe clearances, and anchored where required. Trampolines in particular should be fitted with their safety nets and padding and anchored against wind; the westerly gales in West Gippsland can lift and roll an unanchored trampoline across a yard. We assemble play equipment and fit anchor kits, and check that the site is suitable before we start.

Garden sheds

Small kit sheds need a level, solid base: concrete, pavers or a timber frame. Assembly involves many panels and screws, and sheds must be fixed down securely in our windy conditions. We assemble small kit sheds on an existing prepared base. Larger sheds and garages, and anything that needs a building permit, are better handled by a shed builder.

What to have ready

  • All boxes delivered and in or near the room where the furniture will go.
  • Enough space to lay out panels.
  • Know which wall you want tall furniture against, so we can anchor it.
  • If possible, check that all boxes for each item have arrived; large wardrobes often come in several boxes.

If parts are missing or damaged

It is surprisingly common for flat-pack furniture to arrive with damaged panels or missing fittings. We check parts as we go, and if something is missing or damaged, we will tell you straight away so you can contact the retailer. Where possible, we use spare standard fittings to complete the job. For damaged panels that the retailer needs to replace, we can return to finish once replacements arrive.

A typical assembly visit

Here is a common example. A young family has moved into a new home in Drouin. They have a queen bed frame, two children’s beds, two chests of drawers, a large two-door wardrobe, a bookcase, a TV unit and a desk, all in boxes, plus an outdoor dining set.

Room by room

We start in the children’s rooms so they are usable first. The beds and chests of drawers are assembled, and the drawers are anchored to the wall with straps fixed into studs. Next, the main bedroom: the bed frame and the wardrobe, which is assembled lying down, lifted into place, levelled on the uneven floor and anchored.

Living areas

The TV unit and bookcase are assembled in the living room, the bookcase anchored to the wall. The desk goes into the study.

Outdoors

The outdoor setting is assembled on the patio, with all bolts tightened.

Clean-up

Boxes are broken down and packaging is removed. The family has a fully furnished home by the end of the day.

Tips for buying flat-pack furniture

  • Check the dimensions of the assembled item against your space and doorways, including ceiling height for tall wardrobes, which are often assembled lying down and stood up.
  • Read reviews for comments about assembly quality and missing parts.
  • Keep the instructions and spare fittings after assembly, in case you need to move or repair the item.
  • Solid timber or plywood furniture lasts longer than particleboard, especially in damp rooms.

Repairs to existing flat-pack furniture

Flat-pack furniture that has been in use for a while often develops problems: wobbly frames, drawers that have collapsed, doors hanging crooked and shelves that have bowed. We can tighten and re-square frames, repair stripped holes, replace drawer runners and hinges, add bracing and fit support battens under sagging shelves. Many pieces can be given years of extra life with a little attention.

Damp rooms and particleboard

In West Gippsland’s damp winters, particleboard furniture in laundries, bathrooms and poorly ventilated rooms can absorb moisture and swell, especially at the edges and bottom. Keep furniture slightly away from external walls to allow air circulation, and avoid placing it where it may get wet. If you are buying for a damp area, consider moisture-resistant board or solid timber.

Uneven floors in older homes

Many older homes in Warragul, Trafalgar and Yarragon have floors that are no longer level, especially homes on timber stumps that have settled over the decades. Tall wardrobes and bookcases assembled on a sloping floor lean forward or back, and doors swing open or refuse to close. We level furniture with adjustable feet or discreet packers so doors and drawers work properly, and anchoring to the wall then holds the unit in position. Sometimes a floor slopes enough that it is worth having the stumps checked, and we will mention it if we notice.

Sit-stand desks and home offices

Many people in the district now work from home some or all of the week, and a properly set-up home office makes a real difference. We assemble sit-stand desks, including electric models with motors and control boxes, and set cable trays so cords move freely when the desk rises. We can also assemble office chairs, mount monitor arms, fit shelving above the desk and tidy cables, leaving you with a comfortable, organised workspace.

Assembling in tight spaces

Narrow hallways, steep stairs and small rooms make large furniture tricky. Some items need to be assembled in the room where they will stay, because they will not fit through doorways once built. We plan the order of assembly so panels can be manoeuvred and the item can be stood up without hitting the ceiling.

Protecting your floors

Panels and tools can scratch timber floors and tiles, so we assemble on blankets or the flattened boxes, and fit felt pads to furniture feet before placing items on hard floors.
