Carpentry is at the heart of handyman work. Almost every home in West Gippsland has timber somewhere that needs attention: a rotten window sill, a missing length of architrave, a sagging shelf, a step that has started to move, a weatherboard that has split, a cupboard that needs building into an awkward alcove. These jobs are too small for most builders and too fiddly for most homeowners, and they are exactly what a handyman carpenter is for.
We carry out general and finishing carpentry for homes, rentals and small businesses across Warragul, Drouin, Trafalgar, Yarragon and the surrounding Baw Baw district. Our work covers repairs, trims, storage, small builds and the timber side of maintenance.

Why timber rots in West Gippsland homes
The district’s climate is tough on timber. High rainfall, long damp winters and regular morning fogs mean timber stays wet for long periods. Window sills on the weather side of the house, the bottom of door frames, the ends of verandah boards and the base of weatherboards are the first places to rot. Unpainted or poorly painted timber, timber in contact with the ground, and timber that is splashed by rain from gutters or garden beds all decay faster.
Older homes in Warragul, Trafalgar and Yarragon often have original timber windows and weatherboards. These are worth keeping, and small rot repairs done early can save them for decades. Left too long, rot spreads and the whole window or board needs replacing.
How we repair rotten timber
1. Find the extent. We probe the timber with a screwdriver or awl to find where the soft wood ends and sound wood begins.
2. Remove the rot. Rotten timber is cut out back to sound wood.
3. Choose the repair. For small areas, we use a two-part epoxy timber filler that bonds to the sound timber and can be shaped and sanded. For larger areas, we splice in a new piece of timber, glued and screwed to the existing.
4. Seal and prime. The repaired area and surrounding timber are primed to keep moisture out.
5. Paint. We can paint the repair to match, or leave it primed for your painter. See painting touch-ups.
We will also look for the cause: a blocked gutter overflowing onto a sill, a downpipe splashing against weatherboards, a garden bed piled against the wall. Fixing the cause stops the rot coming back.

Matching old profiles
Older homes often have architraves, skirtings and mouldings in profiles that are no longer standard. When we need to replace a section, we first look for a matching profile from timber suppliers. If none is available, options include:
- Using a similar profile and replacing a whole run so the difference is not noticeable.
- Salvaging timber from a less visible part of the house (such as inside a robe) and replacing that with a modern profile.
- Having a profile milled by a specialist joinery shop for heritage work.
Carpentry for property managers and landlords
Rental properties need regular carpentry: broken architraves, damaged skirting, loose steps, rotting sills and broken shelves. We work through these items efficiently and report back with photos. See property managers.
Carpentry for small businesses
We build and repair shelving, counters, display fixtures and storage for shops, offices and clinics. See commercial handyman.
Materials
We use treated pine for outdoor and in-ground applications, appropriate hardwoods where durability is needed, and primed MDF or pine for interior trims. Fixings are galvanised or stainless steel outdoors to resist corrosion in our wet climate. Where you have specific timber in mind, such as recycled hardwood or a particular species to match existing work, we can source it or work with timber you have supplied.
What we do not do
We do not do structural carpentry such as wall framing, roof framing, load-bearing changes, restumping or extensions. These require a registered builder and often a permit. We do not do cabinetmaking from scratch for full kitchens. If your job needs a builder, we will tell you.
Getting a carpentry quote
Send us photos of the timber that needs work, a wider shot showing where it is, and rough measurements if you can. For new shelving or storage, tell us what you want to store and the size of the space. We will reply with a written scope and free quote. There are no prices online, because carpentry jobs vary widely.

A typical carpentry visit
A common carpentry job looks like this. An owner of a 1950s weatherboard home in Warragul has a rotten front window sill, a split weatherboard beside the back door, a missing piece of architrave in the hallway and a request for shelving in the laundry alcove.
Assessment
We probe the sill and find that the rot extends a little way along the front edge, but the rest of the sill and the window frame are sound. The split weatherboard is near a downpipe that splashes water against the wall. The architrave profile is an older style.
Repairs
The rot in the sill is cut out and an epoxy filler repair is shaped to match the profile, then sanded and primed. The split weatherboard is replaced with a new board of matching profile, and the downpipe is fitted with a splash guard to stop water hitting the wall. For the architrave, we find a close profile at a local timber yard and replace the full length on that door so there is no visible join.
New shelving
In the laundry, we fit sturdy timber shelves on concealed brackets fixed into the studs, sized to hold detergent bottles and baskets.
Finishing
All new timber is primed, the work area is vacuumed, and off-cuts are removed.
Looking after exterior timber
- Keep paint in good condition on all exterior timber; repaint when it starts to chalk or crack.
- Clean gutters so they do not overflow onto sills and walls.
- Keep garden beds and mulch away from weatherboards.
- Check sills and the bottoms of door frames each autumn before the wet season.
- Fill small cracks in paint before water gets in.
Verandahs and front steps
Front verandahs are a feature of many older homes in Warragul, Trafalgar and Yarragon, and they take a beating from the weather. Boards cup and split, the ends of boards rot where they meet the edge, posts rot at the base, and balustrades work loose. Front steps move as their supports settle into wet ground. We replace individual verandah boards with matching widths where possible, repair or replace balustrade sections, fit post stirrups to lift rotted post bases off the ground, and rebuild timber steps so they are solid and even. Safety comes first: a loose balustrade or a wobbling step is a fall risk, especially for older visitors, and we make these safe promptly.
Windows that will not open
Timber sash and casement windows in older homes often stick or are painted shut. We free stuck sashes, ease binding edges, replace broken sash cords where accessible, and fit new stays and catches. Windows that open and close properly improve ventilation, which helps reduce condensation and mould in winter. See also window and flyscreen repairs.
Garages and sheds
Garages and sheds are where many households want more storage. We build heavy-duty shelving for storage tubs, wall-mounted racks for garden tools and bikes, and simple workbenches. In sheds, we repair timber doors, replace rotten bottom plates on small timber sheds, and re-hang doors that have dropped.
Built-in robes and linen cupboards
Many older homes have small or no built-in robes, and newer homes often have basic robes with a single shelf and rail. We can add extra shelving, double hanging rails, shoe shelves and drawer units inside existing robes, making much better use of the space. Linen cupboards benefit from adjustable shelving that can be set to suit towels, sheets and storage boxes. Where a robe has no doors, we can fit sliding or hinged doors to existing openings. For alcoves beside chimneys in older homes, built-in cupboards with shelving above are a practical way to add storage that suits the character of the room.
Tidy work
We cut outdoors or on protected surfaces where possible, vacuum as we go and take off-cuts away.
Frequently asked questions
Can you fix a rotten window sill?
Usually. We cut out the rot and repair with epoxy filler or a spliced timber section, then prime. If the whole sill or frame is gone, replacement may be needed.
Do you build decks?
We repair decks and build small timber steps and landings. Larger decks may need a builder and permit. See our deck repairs page.
Can you match my old architraves?
We look for a matching profile first. If none exists, we suggest options such as replacing a whole run or having a profile milled.
Do you build custom shelving?
Yes. We build shelving and storage to fit alcoves, robes, laundries and garages.
Do you do structural carpentry?
No. Wall framing, load-bearing changes and extensions need a registered builder.
